1/3 season report

Game Week 12 Review

Games are going to come thick and fast now with the game week 13 deadline tomorrow (Tuesday 15th at 16:30). This might be the time we start seeing more rotation more injuries and a struggle to get a full 11 players out.

Being a quick turnaround this week I will not be looking for fan picks but instead, I thought I would look at how I am doing a third of the way through the season.

So as I mentioned in the first blog I do not see myself as good at FPL or an expert but I do love playing. Currently, I (BenfieldXI) am sitting 33,700 in the world and have been holding my place in the top 50k for a few weeks now.

There is no doubt that Captain picks have been keeping me high! Currently, I haven’t had a blank and am getting over 20 points a game week:

My biggest worry currently is that my bench really isn’t strong enough something I am hoping to fix quickly. There is no doubt my Spurs connection has served me well I am looking at options for if or when their form changes.

Leeds Vs West Ham

There was no messing from Bielsa after he revealed his Starting XI in Wednesday's press conference. West ham again showed their strong character and resolve coming from behind to beat Leeds after going a goal down. Both goals were headers from set plays showing a lack of quality from Leeds defending these only West Brom have conceded more goals this season. West ham were maybe a little fortunate to get the 3 points considering how good Illan Meslier was playing but they continue to show they are in every fight until the end.

My FPL Pick

From West Ham I would go for Tomas Soucek he is a player I want in my side and at £5m he is a must. From Leeds, I would still go for Patrick Bamford averaging 6.25 points a game he is doing great and still a low price.

Wolves Vs Aston Villa

Wolves would be right to feel unhappy at not getting at least a point here but their inability to create big chances and score will continue to hurt them. Fabio Silva struck the post and looked the most likely to do something but Aston Villa have Martinez in goal who has been a real revelation this season especially for FPL some jumped of him after the Covid issue but those who stuck with him were rewarded with a big score. This match was highly contested however and cards were flying out leaving both teams with 10 men meaning both Moutinho and Luiz will miss game week 13.

My FPL pick

From Wolves, I cannot see any goals coming but they can keep games tight Semedo might be worth a look although with Chelsea and Spurs coming up soon even there defence could struggle. From Aston Villa I would go for Watkins they have some favourable fixtures coming up and I can see him getting back in the goals.

Newcastle vs West Brom

West Brom continue to struggle and conceding a goal in the first minute did not help. West Brom fought hard to get back into the game and levelled the game at 50 minutes but Newcastle were able to change things up a little brining on Dwight Gale and Jacob Murphy who combined for the late winner. West Brom have City up next and I can only see their troubles continuing. For Newcastle after 2 wins on the bounce they Leeds away and will be looking to continue their good form.

My FPL pick

From Newcastle I would go to Wilson still he is looking good I can see him returning in the coming weeks. From West Brom it difficult but I would say Phillips as he is their most likely to get any points.

Manchester United vs Manchester City

Both teams looked worried about the other sides threats in this game with Bruno Fernandes one side and Kevin De Bruyne on the other. City did manage to muster the most “big chances” especially once the lively Ferran Torres came on it seemed to free up the City attack despite not being directly involved in chances himself. United could have had a Penalty after a rash challenge by Kyle Walker but it was correctly ruled offside after a VAR check.

My FPL Pick

From Manchester United, It is and always will be Bruno Fernandes he has Sheffield United away up next and will look to get back to scoring points. One other option is Marcus Rashford he has a good return away from home maybe the next game will be perfect for him. From Manchester City, it is a similar choice KDB is the man and barring any odd Pep rotation he will continue to score big.

Everton vs Chelsea

The Toffies had been struggling with both system and injuries of late but they found a way to nullify the Chelsea attack. Chelsea often struggle at Goodison park this being their 8th loss in the past 12 meetings. Everton finally changed their shape moving from a back 3 to a back 4 which looked far more solid. Chelsea are picking up injuries to key players and it is certainly testing Frank Lampard with Ziyech out for a while and Pulisic complaining of a hamstring problem they lost some of the danger from midfield.

My FPL Pick

From Everton, I would continue with Calvert-Lewin if they get any goals he will be involved. From Chelsea, I would still stick to the defenders any of Zouma, James or Chilwell will return and with Sheffield United up next, I can see a clean sheet.

Southampton vs Sheffield United

The Saints continue their fine form moving up to 4th in the table but on the other hand, Sheffield United are still without a win and searching desperately for goals. Southampton dominated the game from the start and almost scored with that increasingly familiar sight of Jannik Vestergaard heading a James Ward-Prowse's cross. Hasenhüttl had told supporters to expect a more patient approach from his side, who tend to enjoy much more possession these days. For Sheffield United reaching Christmas without a win is looking likely and with City up next things are going to get very rough.

My FPL pick

From Southampton, I would look to get Ings back in he got straight back into the action and will be looking to give Arsenal a busy game. I would also want to get Ward-Prowse in he might be someone to keep for the season. From Sheffield United, I will abstain from picking anyone they look in real trouble and it is hard to back anyone.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham Hotspur

Jeffrey Schlupp again proved a thorn in Spurs side as for the 2nd meeting in a row he got a decisive goal to add to that some wonderful saves from Vicente Guaita and Palace got a deserved point. Hodgson named an unchanged side and system and it was very effective at containing the Spurs attack. I the 2nd half Zaha and Eze looked dangerous in the counter and Palace looked on for an equaliser. For Tottenham, there was no Bale in the squad and there was a surprise appearance from Alli who late on brilliantly stopped a Palace attack. Tottenham remained top with the point and would be looking to Fulham to get a result later in the day.

My FPL Pick

From Palace I would look at Eze he looks great and is on many of their set plays, From Tottenham, it is obvious Son and Kane are great choices and anyone removing them is crazy but I would again say look to get Dier in he is picking up clean sheets and might score the odd free-kick.

Fulham Vs Liverpool

Many FPL players were looking at this game worried that maybe Salah would be rested and Jota start that was not an issue after it was revealed that Jota will be out for some time. Alisson Becker returned in goal after missing the previous three matches, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was named in the squad for the first time this season. Fulham looked good for their point and maybe would feel they could have more with Reid, Anguisa and Lookman looking good and getting chances. Liverpool suffered further defensive injuries with Matip going off pushing Henderson into the backline. It was a rather dubious penalty decision that gave Liverpool a penalty and it was very nearly saved. The point left Liverpool second level on points with Tottenham going into their clash at Anfield midweek.

My FPL pick

From Fulham, I think Lookman is hitting some form and with the team looking more confident maybe he is due a goal or two. From Liverpool Salah is always my pick especially now Jota is injured I do not see him being rested.

Arsenal vs Burnley

Arsenal came into this game in worse form than Burnley who only have 1 loss in their last 5 games whereas Arsenal have 4 loses and a draw. Arsenal did create more big chances than Burnley but they are lacking any confidence in front of goal they held onto the ball and passed neatly but Burnley were happy to let them continue like this. Ultimately Arsenal’s frustrations would boil over resulting in the ever rash Xhaka grabbing McNeil by the neck. Arsenal have a tough run of games coming up with Southampton, Everton, City and Chelsea it might be hard to see where a win is coming from. Burnley look to have found a rhythm and seem happy to keep games tight and hope for a late goal their next 5 games are key as they face the teams in and around them so will need to attack a little more.

My FPL pick

From Arsenal, I would avoid any attacking players but there is still a shout for a defender like Gabriel although you would need to be desperate. From Burnley, it might be worth looking at Mee or Tarkowski I can see Burnley keeping scores low.

Leicester vs Brighton

Brighton started this game brightly with Welbeck going close early on but Leicester pilled on the pressure with their high paced game and scored 3 goals in 17 minutes. James Maddison was on fine form scoring two goals and Vardy made many FPL managers happy with a goal and two assists. This was Leicester City 3rd win in a row and they will be in confident mood heading into the busy Christmas period. Brighton missed Tariq Lamptey and are struggling with 1 win in 5 and face an inform Fulham next I think they have the quality to get points but is hard to know when and where.

My FPL pick

From Leicester, I would look at Vardy for sure but also Maddison he looked in great form. From Brighton, I think Pascal Gross is the one likely to get points.

My Team for game week 13

I think I will be going for Fernandes as captain I would look at KDB but I worry he could be rested or rotated. I am sticking with Kane and Son for the season baring injury am hoping they do their thing against Liverpool.
