Here we’ll preview gameweek 18 game-by-game, mulling over recent stats to consider which team is likely to have the advantage.
We’ll also provide a player pick for each fixture – someone we think could haul a high points total in the upcoming gameweek.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle
Tuesday 12th January 18:00
Sheffield United’s 3-2 FA Cup victory at Bristol Rovers was incredibly the Blades’ first victory of the season. Chris Wilder will be desperate to make it back-to-back wins against a Newcastle side who are winless in five Premier League games.
Newcastle have failed to score in two of the last three gameweeks, although those blanks did come up against Manchester City and Liverpool. Nevertheless, the likes of Aaron Ramsdale (4.7m), John Egan (4.7m) and Ethan Ampadu (4.3m) offer intriguing budget options for potential free hitters in blank gameweek 18.
For Newcastle, the best option as usual comes in the form of talisman Callum Wilson (6.5m). The pacey striker is predicted to be the fifth highest scoring forward this gameweek on Fantasy Football Hub’s points predictor. At number four is the far more expensive Anthony Martial – which highlights Wilson’s tempting value this gameweek.
Player pick – Callum Wilson
Burnley vs Manchester United
Tuesday 12th January 20:15
Burnley’s 1-0 win against Sheffield United in gameweek 17 means it is now just one defeat in six for Sean Dyche’s men in the league. Could the Clarets even manage to subdue Bruno Fernandes (11.3m), who has blanked just once away from home since joining Manchester United…
Nick Pope (5.4m) is the games second highest scoring goalkeeper so far this season and he could be called into action plenty of times on Tuesday night. The shot-stopper could feasibly rack up the saves and claim all three bonus points in midweek.
It’s impossible to ignore Bruno however, and the Portuguese maestro is predicted to be the third highest points scorer in gameweek 18. His away record is legendary and it’d be foolish not to include him in any potential free hit side.
Player pick – Nick Pope
Wolves vs Everton
Tuesday 12th January 20:15
Wolves ended a four-game winless run at the weekend as they put Crystal Palace to the sword in the FA Cup. Can Nuno’s men repeat the trick against a Dominic Calvert-Lewin-less Everton team on Tuesday?
Calvert-Lewin’s hamstring injury gives the 47% of managers who own him a headache this gameweek. Cenk Tosun (6.0m) could deputise in his absence, but equally Richarlison (7.8m) could be handed the chance to impress in the central role should he be passed fit.
This one should be a tight game however so it would probably be wise to simply back the home team. Roman Saiss (5.1m) has three goals in 12 games – with the defender always likely to pose a threat at set pieces. He’s our player pick this gameweek, in what is likely to be a low-scoring affair.
Player pick – Roman Saiss
Manchester City vs Brighton
Wednesday 13th January 18:00
Manchester City are the heavy favourites as they host 17th placed Brighton in gameweek 18. For free hitters, City assets will be the ones to prioritise as they seem to have turned a corner in recent games.
Kevin de Bruyne (11.7m) has played further up the pitch in certain games of late, which boosts the Belgian’s potential points tally even further. Brighton are without their best defensive midfielder – with Yves Bissouma suspended – while Tariq Lamptey remains out. This game looks perfectly set for City’s attacking players.
City’s defence should enjoy a fairly untroubled 90 minutes, so the likes of Joao Cancelo (5.8m), Ruben Dias (5.8m) and John Stones (5.0m) are also very attractive prospects this gameweek. Look no further than KDB for this one though.
Player pick – Kevin de Bruyne
Tottenham vs Fulham
Wednesday 13th January 20:15
Tottenham’s first team will be well rested for Fulham’s trip across London on Wednesday, having fully rotated in the FA Cup, and Jose Mourinho will accept nothing less than the three points here.
Harry Kane (11.0m) and Heung-Min Son (9.8m) both scored against Leeds last time out and Spurs’ key men yet again will be the most attractive picks this week. The pairs effective ownership will be sky high in gameweek 18, with so many managers looking to activate their free hit. Only dedicated masochists will go without one of the two as they come up against Fulham at home.
Kane has a great record in London derbies and the Spurs talisman is perhaps the most attractive pick across the league in gameweek 18 – alongside Kevin de Bruyne.
Player pick – Harry Kane
Arsenal vs Crystal Palace
Thursday 14th January 20:00
FPL managers are suddenly convinced of Arsenal’s greatness after four straight wins in all competitions, with free hitters jumping on the likes of Kieran Tierney (5.4m) and Bukayo Saka (5.3m) ahead of the gameweek 18 deadline.
Tierney is hard to ignore as a one-off punt after his 18-point haul in gameweek 17. The roving left-back will look to provide the thrust from deep again versus Palace. Could this be the week Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (11.3m) returns a big haul as Arsenal look to continue their fine form?
For Palace, the talisman theory dictates that Wilf Zaha is also worth considering this gameweek. The Ivorian international is always likely to be among any Palace attacking forays and free hitters may overlook him as they focus on the more attractive Arsenal assets.
Player pick – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Best of luck for gameweek 18 FPL managers!
